      Features of Android 15

Android 15 Beta 2 was announce at Google I/O 2024, a day after the company’s annual developer conference kicked off.

The latest beta version of its next major operating system (OS) update is now available to download on Google Pixel smartphones and is coming to select smartphones over the coming weeks.

In 2024, Google is focussing on adding new security and privacy features to Android 15, and the latest beta version contains powerful new features that are available to beta testers.

During a Google I/O developer session, Google show off its first security and privacy-oriented feature coming to smartphones with Android 15, Private Space.

It will allow users to hide certain apps (such a banking, finance, dating, or social media apps) on their smartphone in a secure location.

Apps in the Private Space can be update via a separate Google Play Store app and will also have access to their own storage area not accessible to other apps on the phone.

Google says that the Private Space feature is located in the default app drawer on Android 15.

You can scroll down to the end of the list of apps to reveal the secured app.

This segregate application list can optionally be protected by a separate passcode or using a biometric lock, while allowing them to completely hide its existence.

Google is also upgrading its anti-theft protections with Android 15, making it more difficult for thieves to use a stolen phone that has been reset, without the previously use Google account credentials.

Android 15 will also ask users for their biometrics when attempting to increase the screen timeout, accessing passkeys, or disable Find My Device.

One more powerful anti-theft feature coming to Android 15 is “Theft Detection Lock”, or the ability to lock a smartphone when an “abrupt motion that could indicate theft” has detected.

While, “Offline Device Lock” will also automatically lock itself if a user turns off access to the internet, something a thief might do after stealing a smartphone.

Remote Lock will let users send a command using a different number (when their handset is stolen) to lock and/ or wipe their phone remotely without logging on to Find My Device.

Theft Detection Lock, Remote Lock, and Offline Device Lock are aim at disincentivising smartphone theft and will arrive later this year on handsets running on Android 10 and newer versions, according to Google.

Some other features coming to Android 15 include the ability to automatically enable Bluetooth the next day, we can assume this feature is design to help Google ensure its Find My Device network continues operating as intended.

Google has also adds improvements to the widget picker on Android 15, as well as a redesigned volume control panel that offers better reachability during one-hand use.

Android 15 Beta 2 is available for download on the Google Pixel 8, Google Pixel 8 Pro, Google Pixel 7a, Google Pixel 7, Google Pixel 7 Pro, Google Pixel 6a, Google Pixel 6 Pro, Google Pixel 6, Google Pixel Fold, and Google Pixel Tablet.

At the recent Google I/O developer conference, Google reveal many new features coming to Android 15, including improvements focus on user privacy and security.

But, one feature with a more universal benefit is enhancing battery life.

Android 15 introduces an optimization to Doze mode, a feature already present in the operating system that helps conserve battery when the phone is inactive.

ALSO READ  Do You Know What Would Happen if the Earth Stopped Spinning

The optimization focuses on speeding up the process of entering Doze mode.

According to Google, devices running Android 15 will achieve Doze mode 50% faster compared to Android 14.

Doze mode works by restricting background activity and app access to system resources when the phone remains unused for an extended period.

It translates to reduce battery drain, particularly for apps that might run unnecessary background processes.

Internal testing by Google suggests that this faster Doze mode activation can lead to up to three hours of additional standby time on certain devices.

It’s important to note that the exact improvement may vary depending on the specific phone’s hardware and usage patterns.

The change will apply to all devices receiving the Android 15 update.

So you can expect a general battery life improvement across the board.

Also, the feature is expect to be carried over to Wear OS 6, the next iteration of the smartwatch operating system based on Android 15.

As a release date for Wear OS 6 is not yet confirm, it’s expect to arrive sometime next year.

The improvements to Doze mode in Android 15 represent a practical step towards better battery management for Android users.

While the exact impact on individual devices may differ, the faster transition to Doze mode offers a promising step to achieve extend standby battery life.
