      How is the President of India Elected?

      Indian President is the first head of the state. President is recognise as the first citizen of India and is regards as a symbol of solidarity, unity and integrity of the nation. Indian President also belongs to the part of Union Executive with Vice-President, Prime Minister, Council of Ministers and Attorney-General of India.

      The President of the Republic of India is regard as the head of the state of India and the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces.

      The Constitution of India came into force on 26th January, 1950, and Dr Rajendra Prasad was elected as the first constitutional head of the state, the President of India.

      The presidential election for India will be held in July when the country will be getting its President for the next term.

      BJP’s thumping win in Uttar Pradesh, as well as Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa, will have a big impact on the presidential election.

      The President of India is elect by an Electoral College, which consists of the elected members of both Houses of Parliament and the elected members of the Legislative Assemblies of all the States and also of NCT of Delhi and the Union Territories.

      Since the year constitution came into existence 14 full-time Presidents have been appoint for the country.

      Now current President of India is Ram Nath Kovind.

      Ram Nath Kovind took his charge as president on 25th July, 2017, became the 14th Indian President, appointed by the Electoral College.

      Election of President

      There is no direct election for the Indian President.

      The appointed electoral college elects him.

      The electoral college responsible for President’s elections comprises elected members of :

      • Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha
      • Legislative Assemblies of the states (Legislative Councils have no role)
      • Legislative Assemblies of the Union Territories of Delhi and Puducherry

      Qualifications

      Few conditions or qualifications are assign to be as the Indian President.

      The qualifications to be an Indian President are as follows :

      • He should be an Indian Citizen
      • Age limit is a minimum of 35 years
      • He should qualify the conditions to be elected as a member of the Lok Sabha
      • He should not hold any office of profit under the central government, state government, or any public authority.

      Nomination

      Each candidate running for the post of President of India files his/her nomination on the date set by the Election Commission and deposit a sum of money and submit a signed list of 50 proposers and 50 seconders.

      The proposers and seconders can be any of the electors eligible to vote in the Presidential election.

      Voting

      All the elected MLAs, in their respective state and union territories and all elected MPs, at Parliament, are given ballot papers to cast their vote

      An elector isn’t require to mark preferences for all Presidential candidates.

      He/she has to only mark their first preference for their vote to be consider in the election.

      Counting

      On the day of the counting of votes, all ballots are verified and the counting process begins, and firstly ballot papers are taken state-wise.

      After the state and UT, votes are count ballot papers of the Members of Parliament are taken for counting.

      Winner

      The winner of the Presidential election is not the person who gets the most votes, but the person who gets more votes than a certain quota.

      The quota is decide by adding up the votes poll for each candidate, dividing the sum by 2 and adding ‘1’ to the quotient.

      Oath Ceremony

      A day after the outgoing President demits the office, the President-elect takes the oath.

      The oath for President is usually administer by the Chief Justice of India.
