OpenAI plans to announce its artificial intelligence-power search product, according to two sources familiar with the matter, raising the stakes in its competition with Google.
The announcement date, though subject to change, has not previously reported.
Bloomberg and the Information have report that Microsoft-backed OpenAI is working on a search product to potentially compete with Alphabet’s Google and with Perplexity, a well-fund AI search startup.
OpenAI decline to comment.
The announcement could be time a day before the start of Google’s annual I/O conference, where the tech giant is expect to unveil a slew of AI-related products.
OpenAI’s search product is an extension of its flagship ChatGPT product, and enables ChatGPT to pull in direct information from the Web and include citations, according to Bloomberg.
ChatGPT is OpenAI’s chatbot product that uses the company’s cutting-edge AI models to generate human-like responses to text prompts.
Industry observers have long call as ChatGPT an alternative for gathering online information, though it has struggle with providing accurate and real-time information from the Web.
OpenAI earlier gave it an integration with Microsoft’s Bing for paid subscribers.
While, Google has announce generative AI features for its own namesake engine.
Startup Perplexity, which has a valuation of $1 billion, was found by a former OpenAI researcher, and has gain traction through providing an AI-native search interface that shows citations in results and images as well as text in its responses.
It has 10 million monthly active users, according to a January blog post from the startup.
At the time, OpenAI’s ChatGPT product was call as the fastest application to ever reach 100 million monthly active users after it launched in late 2022.

Apple Said to Be Nearing Deal With OpenAI to Put ChatGPT on iPhone
Apple has close in on an agreement with OpenAI to use the startup’s technology on the iPhone, part of a broader push to bring artificial intelligence features to its devices, according to people familiar with the matter.
The two sides have finalizing terms for a pact to use ChatGPT features in Apple’s iOS 18, the next iPhone operating system, said the people, who ask not to be identified because the situation is private.
Apple also has held talks with Alphabet Inc.’s Google about licensing that company’s Gemini chatbot.
Those discussions haven’t led to an agreement, but are ongoing.
An OpenAI accord would let Apple offer a popular chatbot as part of a flurry of new AI features that it’s planning to announce next month.
Bloomberg reported in April that the discussions with OpenAI had intensified.
Still, there’s no guarantee that an agreement will be announce imminently.
Representatives for Apple, OpenAI and Google decline to comment.
Apple plans to make a splash in the artificial intelligence world in June, when it holds its annual Worldwide Developers Conference.
As part of the push, Apple will run some of its upcoming artificial intelligence features via data centers equip with its own in-house processors, as per Bloomberg.
In 2023, Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook said he personally uses OpenAI’s ChatGPT but added that there were “a number of issues that need to be sorted.”
He promise that new AI features would come to Apple’s products on a “very thoughtful basis.”
On Apple’s earnings conference call last week, he argue that Apple would have an edge in AI.
