      Suman Bery : Meet Niti Aayog’s New Vice Chairman

      Centre government has appoint economist Suman Bery as Niti Aayog’s vice chairman after Rajiv Kumar step down from the post on Friday, 22nd April 2022. Rajiv Kumar had taken over at India’s policy think tank 5 years ago.

      Ministry of Personnel in a statement said that the appointments committee of the cabinet had accept the resignation of Rajiv Kumar and appoint Suman Bery as the full-time member of the Niti Aayog, and later as the vice chairperson from 1st May 2022.

      Suman Bery was the director-general of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), one of the country’s leading independent policy research institutions, for 10 years from 2001 to 2011.

      A senior visiting fellow at the Delhi-headquartered Centre for Policy Research, Suman Bery is a Global Fellow in the Asia program of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington DC.

      Suman Bery is a non-resident Fellow of Bruegel, an economic policy research institution located in Brussels.

      Suman Bery also serve as a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council,

      India’s Statistical Commission and of the Reserve Bank of India’s Technical Advisory Committee on Monetary Policy.

      From early 2012 till mid-2016 Suman Bery was Chief Economist of Shell International, base in The Hague, The Netherlands and advise the board and management of Royal Dutch Shell on global economic and political developments.

      Suman Bery also was part of the senior leadership of Shell’s global scenarios group.

      At Shell, Suman Bery led a collaborative project with Indian think tanks to apply scenario modelling to India’s energy sector.

      Prior to NCAER, Suman Bery was with the World Bank in Washington DC, which he join through the Young Professionals’ Program.

      Suman Bery career at World Bank spanned research on financial sector development and country policy and strategy, notably in Latin America and the Caribbean.

      Suman Bery country experience include Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Peru.

      As Suman Bery was deploy as a Special Consultant to the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India between 1992 and 1994.
