      10 High-Profile Air Crashes that Killed Famous Indians

      13 of the 14 onboard the Indian Air Force helicopter Mi-17V5 died in the air crash. Those who lost their lives in the incident included General Rawat’s wife Madhulika Rawat. This was the most high-profile air crash involving a military officer in India.

      India’s first Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat died in a helicopter crash on Wednesday in Coonoor near Wellington town in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu. CDS Bipin Rawat was flying from Sulur to Coonoor along with 13 others when the helicopter crash.

      List of 10 Most Air Crashes that Killed Famous Indians :

      Lt Gen Daulat Singh, Lt Gen Bikram Singh and AVM EW Pinto in 1963

      Six officers of Indian arm forces including Lieutenant General Bikram Singh, Lt Gen Daulat Singh and Air Vice Marshal EW Pinto died in an air crash on 23rd November, 1963.

      The incident is known as the Poonch Air Crash.

      The officers were on their way to inspect a new water-head when their Aérospatiale Alouette-III helicopter crash.

      Homi Bhabha in 1966

      Top nuclear scientist Homi Jehangir Bhabha died when Air India Flight 101 crash on 24th January, 1966, into Mont Blanc in the Swiss Alps.

      A miscommunication between the pilots and Geneva air control was attribute as the reason for the crash.

      Homi Bhabha’s demise was a major setback for India’s nuclear programme.

      Surendra Mohan Kumaramangalam in 1973

      Former Lok Sabha MP Surendra Mohan Kumaramangalam died on 31st May, 1973, when Indian Airlines Flight 440 crashed in Delhi.

      Surendra Mohan Kumaramangalam body was identified from a Parker pen and his hearing aid.

      Sanjay Gandhi in 1980

      Congress leader Sanjay Gandhi was flying an aircraft of the Delhi Flying Club when it crash near Safdarjung Airport in Delhi on 9th December, 1980.

      The incident took place when he was attempting some dangerous manoeuvres.

      Madhavrao Scindia in 2001

      Former railways minister Madhavrao Scindia was on his way from Delhi to Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur, where he was schedule to address a public rally.

      It was a 10-seater private plane carrying eight persons.

      Madhavrao Scindia plane caught fire and crash on the outskirts of Manipuri in Uttar Pradesh.

      Bad weather and cloudburst were attribute as the reasons behind the crash.

      GMC Balayogi in 2002

      GMC Balayogi was serving as the 12th Speaker of the ok Sabha when he died in a helicopter crash.

      The Bell 206 helicopter he was flying in crash in the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh on 3rd March, 2002.

      KS Sowmya in 2004

      Popular film actor KS Sowmya, more famously known as Soundarya died on A17th pril, 2004, in an air crash.

      KS Sowmya was travelling with her brother from Bengaluru to Karimnagar during an election campaign to support the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

      KS Sowmya act in many Telugu films and also featured in Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi movies.

      OP Jindal, Surender Singh in 2005

      OP Jindal was an industrialist and power minister of Haryana.

      Surender Singh was his ministerial colleague holding the agriculture portfolio.

      OP Jindal and Surender Singh pass away when their King Cobra helicopter head from Delhi to Chandigarh after attending a political meeting crash in the fields near Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh in March 2005.

      YS Rajasekhara Reddy in 2009

      YS Rajasekhara Reddy, then Andhra Pradesh chief minister, died on 2nd September, 2009, when his helicopter crash in the Nallamala forest.

      As YS Rajasekhara Reddy was flying in a Bell 430 helicopter which crash due to bad weather conditions.

      Dorjee Khandu in 2011

      Dorjee Khandu was the Arunachal Pradesh chief minister when he died in an air crash in 2011.

      As Dorjee Khandu was flying in a Pawan Hans helicopter on 30th April 2011 when the aircraft lost contact with the ground control.

      After five days of search, the wreckage was found on 4th May 2021.

      Dorjee Khandu was the second chief minister who died in an air crash.
