OpenAI’s ChatGPT: Default Android Assistant, Licensing Talks Amid NYT Lawsuit, GPT Store Launch Next Week

In the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, OpenAI’s ChatGPT has emerged as a multifaceted force. Recent reports suggest that the innovative language model is on the verge of becoming the default assistant on Android phones.

Simultaneously navigating legal challenges, including talks with publishers amid a lawsuit from The New York Times, OpenAI is showcasing its adaptability.

Adding to the anticipation, the organization is gearing up to unveil the GPT Store, a hub for AI enthusiasts, set to launch next week.

This amalgamation of advancements positions OpenAI and ChatGPT at the forefront of AI integration, licensing negotiations, and community engagement.

ChatGPT App Could Soon Be Set as the Default Assistant on Android Phones: Report

The rise of generative AI applications like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot have made existing standard AI voice assistants like Siri and Google Assistant feel obsolete.

Where advance chatbots can hold human-like conversations, respond to queries on multiple topics, and can now even pull real-time information from the Internet, AI assistants on phones can do limited tasks.

The ChatGPT app on both iOS and Android goes a long way in substituting the default assistant on the device.

But now, OpenAI’s wildly successful chatbot, could likely properly replace Google Assistant on Android smartphones.

Report says that a code within the latest version of the ChatGPT Android app suggests that it could be set as the default assistant on an Android device..

According to the report, ChatGPT version 1.2023.352, which release in December 2023, include a new activity name ‘com.openai.voice.assistant.AssistantActivity.

The activity remains disable by default, but can be manually enable and launch.

When launch, it shows up on the device screen as an overlay with the same animation as ChatGPT app’s voice chat mode, the report claims.

      As per report :

“This overlay appears over other apps and doesn't take up the entire screen like the in-app voice chat mode. So, presumably, you could talk to ChatGPT from any screen by invoking this assistant,”.

It’s clear that assistant mode is a work in progress.

The animation that plays when launching the activity reportedly doesn’t finish and the activity shuts down before you can interact with the chatbot.

The report also says that the code require for the ChatGPT app to work as a “default digital assistant app” exists only partially.

The ChatGPT app also seems to be missing necessary declarations and metadata tags that would allow it to be set as the default assistant on a device.

Google Assistant and Siri scrambling to catch up to modern chatbots.

The ChatGPT app rolled out its voice chat feature for all free users on Android and iOS in November 2023, effectively allowing the app to act as a voice assistant.

As free ChatGPT users cannot access real-time information from the Web on the app, so you can’t ask the chatbot about the latest sports scores or the weather forecast in your city.

You can do that on the GPT-4 power Bing app or the new standalone Copilot app from Microsoft, which launch on both Android and iOS.

While Android users don’t yet have a way to bring up the ChatGPT app easily with a gesture, like they would bring up the Google Assistant, iPhone 15 Pro users can simply bind the app with the dedicated Action Button, to bring it up and start conversing with the press of a single button.

Google is hard at work to bring Bard, its own generative AI chatbot, to Google Assistant.

The Google also recently announce Gemini, its most powerful AI model to date that would compete with OpenAI’s GPT-4 model.

Apple seems to the one lagging behind in the AI assistant race.

The iPhone maker is reportedly working on an AI-infuse iOS 18 that will likely power its next lineup of smartphones.

The default voice assistant on the upcoming iPhone 16 is said to get a major AI update, with the Siri team reportedly re-equip in Q3 2023 to work on including large language models (LLMs) and artificial intelligence-generated content (AIGC).

ChatGPT Maker OpenAI Says It’s Talking With Dozens of Publishers to License Content Amid NYT Lawsuit

OpenAI said it’s talking to dozens of publishers about striking deals to license their articles, a broader effort than was previously known as the startup looks for content to train its artificial intelligence models.

Tom Rubin, OpenAI’s chief of intellectual property and content said :

“We are in the middle of many negotiations and discussions with many publishers. They are active. They are very positive. They’re progressing well,”.

“You’ve seen deals announced, and there will be more in the future.”

OpenAI recently ink a multiyear licensing deal with Politico’s parent company Axel Springer SE for tens of millions of dollars as per insider.

In July 2023, OpenAI announce an agreement with The Associate Press for an undisclose amount.

These deals are key to OpenAI’s future as it’s balancing the need for updated, accurate data to build its models with growing scrutiny about where that data is source from.

One of the companies it had been in talks with, The New York Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft for using the publication’s articles without permission.

The suit poses an existential challenge to OpenAI’s business.

If the NYT wins the case, OpenAI may not only owe billions of dollars, but could also be force to destroy any of its training data that includes work from the NYT, a costly and complicated task.

More immediately the lawsuit complicates OpenAI’s deal-making efforts with the media industry.

      Tom Rubin, said :

“The current situation is vastly different than the situations that the publishers faced in the past with search engines and social media,”.

“Here, the content is used for training a model. It’s not used to reproduce the content. It’s not used to replace the content.”

The NYT disagrees with OpenAI’s stance, arguing that ChatGPT is flat out copying its journalists’ work without paying for it.

In its lawsuit, the publisher show examples in which ChatGPT spit out entire paragraphs of nearly verbatim text from The New York Times.

The publisher argues that’s proof OpenAI use NYT data.

The New York Times said in a statement :

“If Microsoft and OpenAI want to use our work for commercial purposes, the law requires that they first obtain our permission,”.
      “They have not done so.”
OpenAI Set to Launch GPT Store for AI Enthusiasts Next Week

The use of artificial intelligence is increasing day by day and it’s possible to encounter AI technologies in almost every industry.

ChatGPT, which initiated all this chaos, encourages people to develop custom AI models in different fields, further accelerating this process.

Now, OpenAI’s plans go beyond that.

OpenAI plans to launch a store for GPTs and custom apps based on its text generating AI models sometime in the coming week.

As OpenAI sent an email to subscribe developers, announcing that the new application store will open next week.

The email contain the following statement :

“Dear GPT Builder, We want to inform you that we will be launching the GPT Store next week. If you are interested in featuring your GPT in the store, you will need to :

      • Review out updated usage policies and GPT brand guidelines to ensure that you GP is compliant
      • Verify your biulder profile (settings –> builder profile –> enable you name or a verified website)
      • Publish you GPT as ‘Public’ (GPT’s with ‘Anyone with a link’ selected will not be shown in the store)

Thank you for investing time to build a GPT – ChatGPT Team”

The opening of the store is part of OpenAI’s efforts to make GPT available to a wider user base.

OpenAI is striving to ensure the responsible and safe use of GPT.

As part of these efforts, the store will take various measures to prevent the misuse of GPT.

The opening of the store signifies a significant advancement in the field of artificial intelligence.

This development indicates that artificial intelligence is beginning to play a greater role in daily use.
