Whenever you think of a bicycle you all have a image in your mind in terms of what you can expect from it a sleek frame, two wheels and the rear wheel connected to the pedals via a chain.
But now a German automotive parts company has develop a new device that essentially eliminates the need for the rear wheel to be connect to the pedals via a chain system.
This device is develop by Schaeffler.
The device is known as Free Drive and this can change the way electric bikes will be design in the future.
The Schaeffler is making use of a mechanism which call ‘Bike by wire’ where the pedalling action will turn the energy into electricity and this will be sent to a motor with the help of electric wiring.
This machine is capable of providing a standard distance of five inches between the two pedals,
So if we look theoretically then these pedals can be place anywhere on the bicycle and the wires can be route accordingly which something that’s not possible in the case of conventional chain drives.
If you were wondering why would someone switch to something like this when an already efficient way of making bikes exists.
As this would require less maintenance compare to a conventional chain-link system.
Ths system consists of a small generator which is a 250-watt wheel hub motor and connect to a lithium-ion battery and control unit that’s install on the handle.
The device mechanism is identical to what electric cars use today.
This device to offer a realistic riding experience and it also offers resistance that the rider feels while pedalling.
A rider can tweak the resistance to his liking and in case he chooses a higher resistance then it would result in the generation of more power where an excess of it can even be store in the battery of the electric bike.
