Researchers at the Carnegie Institution for Science have develop a new kind of ultrahard carbon glass that’s one of the hardest in the world. As diamond is one of the hardest materials known to humans.
This hardness is because the bond holding the carbon-base material is made in a particular pattern.
Other kinds of carbon such as soft graphite have two-dimensional bonds.
But, using diamond to create a glass is not only going to be expensive, but its high melting point makes it an impossible starter material.
Researchers have create a it by using a form of carbon, compose of 60 molecules arrange to form a hollow ball.
This material was heat just enough to allow the ball to fall on its own, to induce disorder before turning the carbon to crystalline diamond under pressure.
Scientists team then use a large-volume multi-anvil press to synthesize the diamond-like glass.
Researchers claim that the glass is sufficiently large for characterisation.
High-resolution techniques for probing atomic structure confirm its properties.
Researchers claim that this glass is the hardest known glass with the highest thermal conductivity among all glass materials.
This glass has potential applications for numerous devices and electronics.
Yingwei Fei, one of the lead Researchers of the study Explains :
This hard glass will surely be a boost upgrade as long as it’s not going to make our smartphones expensive.
