Virat Kohli on 15th January, 2022 announce that he will step down as India’s Test captain, after his team’s 1-2 series lost to South Africa at Cape Town. As Virat Kohli had step down T20I captaincy earlier just ahead of the T20 World Cup.
After which BCCI sack him as the ODI skipper as well.

Kohli’s decision comes after India had lost the third Test match in Cape Town.
India land in South Africa as the clear favourites to lift the three-match series, instead the team crash to 1-2 series defeat which saw them losing the second and third Test match with a margin of seven wickets.
With this Virat Kohli also became the only Indian skipper to lose successive Test series in the Rainbow Nation.
In September Virat Kohli had said that he will step down from T20I captaincy just ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup.
It was later reveale that BCCI had ask him to rethink as the Board didn’t want multiple captains in limited overs cricket.
With Virat Kohli not changing his mind, BCCI was force to sack him from ODI captaincy.
There were reports that Board might sack him if Virat Kohli loses in South Africa.
But, Virat Kohli had opt to resign himself.

The decision came a day after India lost a Test series in South Africa 2-1.
Ravi Shastri said Kohli was bowing out as India’s most successful and one of the most aggressive captains in Test cricket.

When Virat Kohli took over as India’s Test captain in 2014-15 season after an unforeseen decision from MS Dhoni to retire from the longest format, Ravi Shastri was part of the dressing room as India’s team manager.
Ravi Shastri’s tenure came to an end after the 2015 World Cup but Ravi was back with the team in 2017 after Anil Kumble’s exit as India head coach.
